HP Install Network Printer Wizard 4.0 - Configuring a Printer for a Windows TCP/IP Network
Mon, 01 Nov 2010 13:52:07 -0500

The HP Install Network Printer Wizard provides interactive or automatic software installation and setup of either wired or wireless network printers (and All-in-One devices). Most newer printers incorporate network configuration into the printer's CD-ROM used to install the printer driver. However the latest version of INPW can be downloaded from the HP web site and may have newer features, such as wireless print server configuration capability. Download: Click here to download the Install Network Printer Wizard . Preparation NOTE: If the computer has a firewall installed or enabled, the configuration will fail and display an error. Therefore, temporarily disable any firewall that may be on the computer, including firewalls such as Sygate, Zone Alarm, BlackICE, or the Windows XP firewall. Before using the Install Network Printer Wizard, print a Configuration page from the printer or external HP Jetdirect print server. Printing the Configuration page will provide useful information, including: * the current TCP (Transmission Control Protocol)/IP (Internet Protocol) (Transmission Control Protocol/Internet Protocol) address * any Ready or Error messages that indicate network communication status * a network statistics section showing the amount and types of packets the HP Jetdirect is transmitting and receiving If the Configuration page shows an old TCP (Transmission Control Protocol)/IP (Internet Protocol) (Transmission Control Protocol/Internet Protocol) address or other old configuration settings that you do not want, restore the print server to its factory default settings (known as a cold reset). Printing the configuration page to verify the status of the HP Jetdirect or Embedded Jetdirect Inside print server o Most HP printers with internal HP Jetdirect print servers can be reset to factory defaults (or cold-reset) by turning the printer off and holding down the ONLINE or GO buttons while turning the printer back on. The printer control panel display should read Cold Reset or Restoring Factory Settings. If the printer has no display, the indicator lights will cycle. o To cold reset an HP Jetdirect external print server, unplug the power cord from the HP Jetdirect print server, then hold down the TEST button (on top of or in back of the HP Jetdirect) for five to 30 seconds while plugging in the power cord. o Most HP printers with embedded HP Jetdirect Inside print servercan be reset to factory defaults (or cold-reset) by turning the printer off and holding down the ONLINE or GO buttons while turning the printer back on. The printer control panel display should read, Cold Reset or Restoring Factory Settings. If the printer has no display, the indicator lights will cycle. See the printer documentation for more assistance. When the Configuration page prints, read it to verify the following:  Verify the TCP (Transmission Control Protocol)/IP (Internet Protocol) (Transmission Control Protocol/Internet Protocol) address. The default IP (Internet Protocol) address is either 192.0.0.192 (this must be changed to a valid address for the network) or 168.254.x.x. The TCP (Transmission Control Protocol)/IP (Internet Protocol) (Transmission Control Protocol/Internet Protocol) status should read, "Ready". "I/O Card Ready" should appear on the configuration page. The HP Jetdirect firmware version or revision is x.03.16 or greater. Restoring an HP Jetdirect to factory defaults In some cases, it may be necessary to reset an HP Jetdirect print server to factory defaults. Resetting to factory defaults should remove any previous configurations, such as an old TCP (Transmission Control Protocol)/IP (Internet Protocol) (Transmission Control Protocol/Internet Protocol) address, and verify that any error messages that appear on the configuration page have not been resolved. It can also help discover the printer in the HP Install network Printer Wizard. o Internal HP Jetdirect cards: Most HP printers can be reset to factory defaults (or cold-reset) by turning the printer off and holding down ONLINE or GO while turning the printer on. Release the button when the printer control panel display reads, COLD RESET or RESTORING FACTORY SETTINGS. o External HP Jetdirect print servers: Unplug the power cord from the HP Jetdirect device, then hold down the TEST button for five to 30 seconds while plugging in the power cord. o Embedded Jetdirect Inside print servers: The method to reset an internal embedded Jetdirect Inside print server to factory defaults (cold reset) may vary from printer-to-printer. See the printer documentation for assistance resetting the printer and the embedded Jetdirect Inside print server back to factory defaults. o HP Designjet plotters: Many HP Designjet plotters cannot reset an HP Jetdirect device. Telnet can be used to reset the TCP (Transmission Control Protocol)/IP (Internet Protocol) (Transmission Control Protocol/Internet Protocol) settings. However, the HP Designjet 1050C, 1055CM, 500, and 800 series have a reset option in the control panel menus. Using the Install Network Printer Wizard NOTE: If the computer has a firewall installed or enabled, the configuration will fail and display an error. Therefore, temporarily disable any firewall that may be on the computer, including firewalls such as Sygate, Zone Alarm, BlackICE, or the Windows XP firewall. If the product is downloaded and installed, click Start, Programs, and HP Install Network Printer Wizard. When the utility runs, select Next. Select either Wired or Wireless, depending on the connection of your print server and click Next. Click here to go to the Wired section . Wireless Setup NOTE: If the computer has a firewall installed or enabled, the configuration will fail and display an error. Therefor, temporarily disable any firewall that may be on the computer, including firewalls such as Sygate, Zone Alarm, BlackICE, or Windows XP firewall. If you are using a combination wired/wireless HP print server, it is recommended that you configure the print server's wireless settings using a network (Local Area Network) cable. Although you can configure it without a network cable (i.e., using a wireless connection) it is generally easier to configure using the network (Local Area Network) cable that is included with the print server. For a new print server that has not been configured, select First time wireless printer software installation and click Next. NOTE: By default, the wizard will install the printer on this personal computer. If you only want to configure wireless settings and not install the printer driver, uncheck the box next to Install the printer on this personal computer. If left checked (default), the wizard will install the printer on this personal computer after wireless connection settings have been configured. example Select either Combination wireless and wired print server or Wireless only print server, then click Next example If using a combination wired/wireless HP Print server, Select the configuration method to configure the wireless settings using a network cable, then click Next. The encryption methods will also provide screens to enter either a WEP key or a pre-shared key. example or * If you selected Enter an unlisted wireless network, then you can select Ad Hoc or Infrastructure mode, specify a Network Name, or associate to the wireless network with the strongest signal, then click Next to select the encryption methods above. example Click Advanced to configure additional settings, such as the IP (Internet Protocol) address, and/or just verify the settings shown on screen by the wizard, then click Next. example If you are using a combination wired/wireless HP Print server, disconnect the network cable and click Next to continue with adding the printer driver and port to the computer. The wizard will search for the now wireless printer. This may take some time, so wait at least one minute. If, after that time, the printer is not seen, click Refresh. Once found, select it and click Next. Complete the software installation by installing the printer driver as described in the Wired section above . -- Handy Software Lab
